What is a Limit Switch? Types of Limit Switches and their Benefits

A limit switch is a device that is used to prove the open or closed position of a
valve.

These switches can either be a mechanical device or a proximity switch. Many times when
it is a proximity switch, they are referred to as a “prox switch”. Limit switches can
send a confirmation signal to a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) or a DCS
(Distributed Control System) to let the computers know if the valve is open or closed.
Very often limit switches have a visual beacon that is on top of the device to allow
operators to visually and easily see of the valve is open or closed. These switches
need to be classified for the area classification that they are operating in such as
NEMA 4, 4X, or 7.
